Uncle Tom and Turf Moor

Some of the best memories I have of our Uncle Tom are when he took me and my sister Gill to watch his beloved Clarets at Turf Moor. We watched most home games from the mid 70’s to the early 80’s, so a lot of games. We loved everything about it, and left us with a love of football and Burnley Football Club to this day. I always remember him keeping us safe, he had an instinct for when trouble was brewing, and kept us safe and out of harms way, especially one memorable Saturday when marauding Mill Wall fans were heading our way!
During winter games he brought his famous flask of coffee with him, with a tot of something warming added to keep off the chill, it certainly did the trick!
We had many memorable outings and holidays and I loved every one of them, he made every trip intereting, telling us facts and stories along the way. One especially long trip was to Ilfracombe in Devon, 5 of us in his VW Beetle, the car nearly gave up the ghost ascending Porlock Hill, myself, Gill and Alison were in the back looking down the huge hill fearing the worst, Uncle Tom had faith in his beloved Beetle, and we survived to have a memorable holiday.
These are some of mine and my sisters happy memories of Uncle Tom, we are going to really miss him, but these and other happy memories will always be a comfort to us and our family.
